Eats- Mulled Wine

photo 2

When I was in Vienna I guzzled mulled wine like it was my job. Christmas markets were around every corner, and how else would you stay warm and wash down your roasted chestnut and pretzels? Since I have been home I had never made it on my own, but with the storm that came this weekend, I thought it would be the best way to stay cozy.

photo 1 This recipe is so easy, and what I love most is that it isn’t too sweet. I have had gluhwein that just tasted like grape kool aid mixed with brandy, but this one was tremendous.

2 cups apple cider
1 (750-ml) bottle red wine, such as Cabernet Sauvignon
Generous squeeze of honey
2 cinnamon sticks
1 orange, zested and juiced
6 whole cloves
Combine all ingredients in a sauce pan and heat on stove top until warm, around 10 minutes. Pour into glasses and garnish with an orange peel. Enjoy!
